Although we were unable to attend the planned event in September, I have just heard
that the fly-in has been cancelled.
It would appear that the local mayor and council have objected due to noise. This
is surprising, considering the enormous size of Pollensa Bay (see right). The organisers
of the Pollensa event were happy to set up a landing and circuit area well out in
the bay, more a mile away from the coast, but there seemed to be no desire for compromise.
Considering that military twin-engine water bombers are based there and regularly
use the bay; the ‘extra’ noise of ten single small-engined seaplanes over two days
every alternate year, would not seem excessive!
The town will not benefit from business of the large number of visitors that usually
attend these events, so it seems that everyone will lose.
MORE BAD NEWS:
Rather belatedly I have heard that another of our planned venues, the Culdrose Air
Day, has been cancelled.
This is due to the extra-ordinary amount of work the base is having to take on this
year in order to train the helicopter crews for the two new Queen Elizabeth aircraft
Hopefully they will be back on the airshow circuit in 2018.
